At the beginning, everything is one for your baby. When babies are born, they know no boundary between themselves and the world. They feel warmth, hunger, closeness – but not yet an “I”. Only with time does a sense develop of where their own body ends and something else begins.

This development is quiet and slow. And parents can wonderfully accompany it.

How Body Awareness Develops

Even newborns perceive stimuli: light, sounds, smells, touch. But they cannot yet separate these impressions from each other. Everything flows into everything else. Only through daily experiences does the brain learn to sort these stimuli.

Touch plays a central role in this. When babies are stroked, carried, or held, orientation develops. The body gradually becomes a “map” for one's own experience: This is me. This is what my arm feels like. This is what my skin feels like.

Spontaneous movements – kicking, turning, stretching – also help. Every movement sends feedback: Where do I feel contact? Which muscles are tensing? Such experiences gradually build an internal body image.

Why Naked Kicking is So Valuable

Many babies love to move freely. Without clothes, they have more freedom of movement and feel their surroundings more intensely: the floor beneath them, air on their skin, contact with their hands and feet.

These sensory impressions are important for experiencing body boundaries. When a baby stretches and suddenly feels nothing under its feet, the realization comes: My body extends this far.

Therefore, it can help to regularly include a small “naked kicking time.” A warm room, a blanket or towel, a few minutes of shared attention – that’s all it takes.

And of course, only for as long as your baby enjoys it. You can read how to interpret their early signals in this blog post.

Making Boundaries Lovingly Perceptible

Babies need contact to feel secure. At the same time, this contact helps them feel boundaries. When parents gently hold their child while creaming, announce what is happening during diaper changes, or gently support the body during play, they convey security and orientation.

This creates a fine sense of closeness and distance and the foundation for trust. Because those who know where their own "I" begins can later better assert themselves, communicate, and regulate.

Small Rituals for More Body Awareness

  • Kicking time during the day: Let your baby play naked or just in a diaper for a few minutes regularly.
  • Gentle creaming: Use the moment to calmly talk to them and describe what you are doing.
  • Physical contact during play: Small stroking games or rhymes help to connect perception. The mo:mo konnektor provides new sensory experiences and adds variety here.
  • Calm transitions: After movement or stimuli, gentle touches help to settle down again.

In the mo:mo App you will find many activities around body awareness and touch.

When Parents Accompany Attentively

The most important thing is for parents to observe their baby and react sensitively.
Does it show joy, curiosity, relaxation? Or does it become restless, turn away?
Babies clearly show what is good for them. Paying attention to these signals not only strengthens body awareness but also the relationship.

Conclusion

A baby discovers itself by feeling, moving, experiencing. Parents don't have to "train" anything. They can simply be there, give time, show affection. With every touch, the awareness grows: I am me.

Frequently Asked Questions by Parents

When do babies become self-aware?
From the first weeks of life, babies sense their bodies without consciously "knowing" them. True self-awareness usually develops over the course of the second year of life. This is, for example, when children begin to recognize themselves in the mirror.

Is naked kicking really necessary?
Not mandatory, but very helpful. Free movement without clothes promotes body awareness because the baby feels its skin more directly. It is important that the room is warm and the baby feels comfortable.

How do I know if it's too much for my baby?
Pay attention to body signals: If your baby turns away, whines, or tenses their body, they need a break. Short, pleasant stimuli are better than too much at once.

Does massage help with body awareness?
Yes. Baby massages or gentle strokes not only support body awareness, but also bonding, digestion, and relaxation. With the mo:mo konnektor, you can easily promote your baby's body awareness.
